Kane County is continuing to accept and process building and zoning permit applications as well as administering our other programs.  Our team is prepared, equipped and committed to serving residents and businesses as well as the development and construction community through this time.

We request that the public conduct business by phone and email as much as possible.  In-person submittals may be made at our office during regular business hours, by taking the elevator to the fourth floor after receiving a temperature check at the first floor entrance.  Please note the following changes to our policies and procedures for submittals:

  • PDF's of applications, submittals, building plans, plan revisions and other documents typically submitted as a hard copy may now be emailed to: KaneBuildingDeptPermits@KaneCountyIL.gov
  • If you use Microsoft Outlook you can also use this link: KaneBuildingDeptPermits.
  • Original copies may be required to be mailed or delivered in the future.
  • Payments for permit fees may be made online at: ipn2.paymentus.com/rotp/kccs.
  • Once an application has been approved and paid for, the applicant may be required to have the approved PDF printed and available on the project site for the inspector's use.

  • In-person meetings with staff are encouraged to be by appointment.
  • When you arrive for a scheduled meeting, please use the phone to the left of the elevator to call your party.
  • If you are coming to drop off or pick up a permit, please ring the doorbell and wait until you are buzzed in.
  • If there are more than four parties waiting at the counter, we may ask you to wait in the lobby for a short time.

Building Inspections are currently being scheduled and conducted.

Inspection Policies effective 11/17/2020 until further notice:

  1. For permits that require an indoor inspection in occupied homes or businesses:  Inspections may be conducted remotely using Facetime, or by allowing the owner/contractor to provide photo or other documentation sufficient to demonstrate compliance, or postpone the inspection.

  2. For permits that require an indoor inspection in unoccupied homes or businesses:  Inspections may be conducted in-person or remotely using Facetime.  If conducted in-person, the inspector and all others present at the site must wear a mask and observe distancing.  If these are not being followed, or if the inspector otherwise feels unsafe, the inspector may terminate the inspection and leave.  In such cases, inspections may then either be conducted remotely using Facetime, or by allowing the owner/contractor to provide photo or other documentation sufficient to demonstrate compliance, or postponed the inspection.

  3. For all outdoor inspections:  The inspector and all others present at the site must wear a mask and observe distancing if others are present or are within 10 feet.  If these are not being followed, or if the inspector otherwise feels unsafe, the inspector may terminate the inspection and leave.  In such cases, inspections may then either be conducted remotely using Facetime, or by allowing the owner/contractor to provide photo or other documentation sufficient to demonstrate compliance, or postpone the inspection.

In the event that County operations are limited, please note the following:

  • The adopted building code provides for emergency repairs.  R105.2.1 Emergency Repairs: Where equipment replacements and repairs must be performed in an emergency situation, the permit application shall be submitted within the next working business day to the building official.

  • If County inspectors are not being scheduled for inspections on a date or dates when the inspection is needed for the continuation of the work, the areas of work required to be inspected may be documented with photographs to demonstrate compliance with the building code along with a letter for missed inspections.  Approval of the missed inspections and potential waiver of fees for missed inspections will be considered on a case by case basis.
