Possible Flooding Over WeekendUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING THIS WEEKEND DUE TO HEAVY RAIN AND RAPID SNOW MELT HYDROLOGIC OUTLOOK...CORRECTED NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO IL 656 AM CST WED DEC 24 2008 ...POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING THIS WEEKEND DUE TO HEAVY RAIN AND RAPID SNOW MELT... THERE WILL BE THE POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT FLOODING PROBLEMS STARTING FRIDAY NIGHT. TEMPERATURES WILL WARM WELL ABOVE FREEZING FRIDAY INTO SATURDAY IN ASSOCIATION WITH A STORM SYSTEM THAT WILL TRACK FROM THE PLAINS TO THE UPPER MIDWEST. TEMPERATURES ARE FORECAST TO CLIMB INTO THE 40S AND 50S ACROSS NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND NORTHWEST INDIANA BY SATURDAY. THIS WARM AND MOIST AIRMASS WILL BE EFFICIENT AT MELTING THE SNOW AND ICE ALREADY ON THE GROUND...WHICH CONTAINS UPWARDS OF AN INCH OF WATER SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 80 AND UP TO TWO INCHES ACROSS FAR NORTHERN ILLINOIS NEAR THE WISCONSIN BORDER. IN ADDITION TO THIS WATER CURRENTLY LOCKED UP IN SNOW PACK...THE POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY RAINFALL EXISTS WITH THE WEEKEND STORM SYSTEM. CURRENT INDICATIONS ARE THAT WIDESPREAD MODERATE RAIN WILL OCCUR FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY...WITH PERIODS OF HEAVY RAINFALL POSSIBLE AS THERE WILL BE SOME EMBEDDED THUNDERSTORMS. ALL OF THIS WATER...FROM BOTH SNOW MELT AND RAIN...WILL BE PRONE TO RAPID RUNOFF GIVEN THE FROZEN GROUND. THIS WILL LIKELY CAUSE SIGNIFICANT LOCALIZED FLOODING PROBLEMS...AND WILL ALSO LIKELY RESULT IN INCREASED LEVELS AND FLOWS ON AREA RIVERS. DUE TO RECENT SUBZERO WEATHER...MANY AREA RIVERS ARE CURRENTLY FROZEN...AND THE COMBINATION OF MELTING...AND BREAKUP OF ICE DUE TO INCREASED FLOWS MAY LEAD TO ADDITIONAL ICE JAM FLOODING. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT ANY SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN STORM TRACK WITH THIS SYSTEM MAY RESULT IN DIFFERENCES IN TEMPERATURES AND PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY. HOWEVER...IT APPEARS AT THIS TIME THAT THE POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT AND WIDESPREAD FLOODING PROBLEMS IS RELATIVELY HIGH. MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS AND STATEMENTS FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON THIS POTENTIAL SIGNIFICANT FLOODING SITUATION.
