County Board Applauds St. Charles

The Kane County Board formally congratulated the City of St. Charles last month at being ranked Number One by

Family Circle Magazine in its annual survey of best towns and cities for families across the country. Flanked by more than a dozen officials and employees of St. Charles and its park, library and school districts, County Board members Philip Lewis, Mark Davoust and John Hoscheit, who represent St. Charles, along with County Board Chairman Karen McConnaughay, a City resident, presented Mayor Don DeWitte with a "Certificate of Recognition" for the national achievement.

DeWitte said the survey was confirmation of the intergovernmental cooperation and community spirit that drives St. Charles, calling it "the key to having created the environment that is now nationally-recognized."

"St. Charles is a terrific place to live, work and raise a family," he said.

Listed among "the City's celebrated qualities," according to the Certificate of Recognition, was its "vast amount of open space, excellent environmental benefits, successful school districts, tourism and wonderful community spirit." It noted Mayor DeWitte's belief that "the city's strong sense of history, heritage and alignment along the Fox River all play an important role in drawing families to the area."

St. Charles was selected from Family Circle's initial group of 2,500 towns with populations of between 15,000 and 150,000 and later pared down to 1,000 towns and eventually the magazine's Top 10.

"I'm very proud of the town I live in," said McConnaughay, who joined the County Board in formally calling upon residents of Kane County "to celebrate with the City of St. Charles and join with them in extending a thank you and the hand of friendship to those who have worked so hard to make this occasion a success."
