cmapCMAP Surveys:
ON TO 2050 & Bicycle Usage

CMAP invites residents to share their input for two ongoing surveys

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning is promoting two open surveys to gain vital input from communities across the region.

The ON TO 2050 survey asks respondents to rank various regional challenges and responses across the categories of Transportation, Land Use, Economic Development and Governance. This input-gathering step is part of CMAP's ongoing public engagement efforts to be continued in various forms throughout the ON TO 2050 planning process. The survey also invites respondents to share their big ideas for addressing the critical challenges facing our region.

CMAP has also launched a Bicycle Usage Survey to better understand the benefits of implementing various bicycle infrastructure improvements. The information gathered will be used to develop an analysis tool that communities can access to prioritize improvements for bicycle facilities. The Bicycle Usage Survey will remain open through June 15, 2016.
For more ways to stay involved in the ON TO 2050 planning process, visit the input page or contact Bernice Vallencillos at bvallecillos@cmap.illinois.gov. For more information on the Bicycle usage survey, contact CMAP's Craig Heither at CHeither@cmap.illinois.gov or 312-386-8768.

toolsSustainability Tools for Assessing and Rating Communities

Star Community Rating System integrates sustainability into community planning

The Sustainability Tools for Assessing & Rating Communities (STAR) is a guide developed for planners and local government administrators to help them integrate sustainability principles within their community plans. By integrating sustainability into a comprehensive plan, a community can transition from talking about sustainability in the abstract to identifying concrete practices, implementing solutions, and measuring impact. The STAR Community Rating SystemTM (STAR) is a valuable tool that helps cities and counties to become healthier, stronger, and more resilient.
STAR allows cities and counties to set a clear path for sustainability and track progress towards meaningful results that save money and improve communities. The rating system provides a robust, data-driven framework that allows communities to define sustainability for themselves and then evaluate and improve economic, environmental, and social performance.
While comprehensive plans provide long-term guidance for the future development of a community, other supporting plans aid in the day-to-day implementation and management of the local government: short-term strategic plans and plans that address specific issues, such as a hazard mitigation plan, climate action plan, or sustainability plan. The measures and guidance in the STAR Community Rating System can be adapted to support all types of plans.
Download a free copy of the sustainability guide or visit the Star Communities website for more information for more information on their certification program.
